Kaai develops continuous wave green laser diode

February 23, 2021

LEDC editor Mizyhe reports: Kaai is a manufacturer of InGaN green and blue lasers for consumer applications, and recently demonstrated a green laser diode based on non-polar and semi-polar GaN substrates. The operating wavelength is 523 nm (continuous wave). It is reported that this is a green laser diode that operates at the longest wavelength in the continuous wave state.
In consumer projection displays, safety indicators and lighting, physiology, industrial imaging, etc., collimated green semiconductor lasers are more suitable than conventional gas or solid state lasers in terms of size, weight and cost. This means that the preparation of a 532 nm green laser operating in continuous mode is about to reach its goal, making RGB laser display possible.
Of course, longer-wavelength lasers have been reported before, but it only works in pulse mode. For example, in July last year, SEI announced a laser based on a semi-polar GaN substrate (Yoshizumi et al, Appl. Phys. Express vol2, P092101, 2009); before this, the continuous working mode laser was also prepared by SEI with a wavelength of up to 520 nm (Enya et al, Appl. Phys. Express, vol2, p082101, 2009).
Founded in 2008, Kaai was founded by GaN-based laser precursors, UCSB professors Shuji Nakamura, Steven Denbaars, and James Speck.
